When was the last time you paused long enough to deeply appreciate someone or something in your life? A moment spent in a state of of gratitude can create a sense of enhanced well-being or become a source of healing, especially when we find ourselves in grief or during difficult times. What is Gratitude? According to Oxford Languagesgratitude (noun) is “the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.”Gratitude can also be explained as an act of recognizing and appreciating the good in our daily lives. And is less about extravagant gestures and more about taking pause to say a simple “thank you” or to notice the beauty in otherwise ordinary moments. The Healing Effects of Being Grateful When we’re navigating grief or find ourselves facing difficult times, it may be hard to see the light in the darkness. But science suggests we should try, as the act of gratitude has been linked to a host of healing benefits, including the following:• Enhanced Sense of Well-being: Whether taking a moment each day to quietly reflect on and appreciate what you value most in your life, or outwardly express your gratitude to another by sharing a simple, heartfelt “thank you” -- Spending time in a state of gratitude serves to temporarily shift our attention away from our pain or distress to that which is good, and in so doing may reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. • Enhanced Physical Health: Reportedly, gratitude also impacts our physical well-being. Studies have shown that grateful people tend to sleep better, have fewer aches and pains, and may even experience lower blood pressure.• Enhanced Relationships: Taking time to appreciate those around you can strengthen bonds, foster trust, and deepen emotional connections.Cultivating gratitude, provides us with an emotional anchor to help steady us during turbulent and challenging times. The Ripple Effect of “Thank You”Expressing gratitude doesn’t just positively impact us individually, the ripple effect it generates will also influences others. A sincere “thank you” for example, may brighten someone else’s day and inspire them to pass on the kindness. Because of the ripple effect, even the smallest act of gratitude contributes to positive changes in the world. Creative Ways to Share and Spread Gratitude Cultivating a regular practice of gratitude doesn’t have to look the same for everyone, and it certainly shouldn’t feel boring or burdensome. The following are just a few ideas that may resonate with you: •Start a Gratitude Jar: Write down one thing you’re thankful for each day on a slip of paper and store it in a jar. Watch it fill up over the weeks and revisit those moments whenever you need a pick-me-up. Photo of my version of a “Gratitude Jar”•Send a “Thank-you” Message: Take time to send a message of thanks to someone you value, or who has touched your life in a meaningful way. Sending a message of appreciation is a wonderful way to express gratitude.•Create a Gratitude Board: Write down things you are grateful for on sticky notes then place them where you can see them daily, like on your fridge, desk, whiteboard or mirror.•Volunteer Your Time: Give back. Volunteering allows you an opportunity to express gratitude while helping others.•Cultivate a Daily Practice of Mindful Gratitude: Spend a few moments each day appreciating and reflecting on the simple joys in your life.Incorporating Gratitude During Tough TimesPracticing gratitude isn’t always easy, especially when in grief or going through hard times. Gratitude does not require you ignore grief or your feelings. But for those who eventually find a space for gratitude to reside alongside their grief, the experience can be profound. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or moving through grief, perhaps try being grateful for just one thing a day. For example, kind words from a friend or family member. Small steps add up.Although gratitude doesn’t erase hardship, it can make the weight easier to bear by helping us to focus on the light, even in the darkest of times.Finding Healing Through Everyday GratitudeGratitude has the power to heal, strengthen, connect, and inspire. But more than that, it reminds us to savor the gift of the present moment. Why not consider starting a daily gratitude practice, if you haven’t already? A small change to your daily routine could produce big benefits. The way in which you choose to express your gratitude is up to you. But, no matter your choice, the result may be transformative, or surprising in unique and meaningful ways. What are you grateful for today?
